The first group of sponsored students through the Community Benefit Share Project, in collaboration with the Solomon Islands National University (CBSP/ SINU), completed a formal evaluation with Pasifiki HR and the CBSP team this week in Honiara. The University partnership with the Tina River Hydropower Development Project aims to train students from catchment communities and is a part of the Government's commitment to building capacity and up-skilling locals for future employment.
The students, who are enrolled in various trade courses at SINU, had an opportunity to provide feedback and raise issues that will help improve the current program for the remainder of their studies and future students.
According to Pasifiki HR People Manager Alphea Tufah, the evaluation process is critical and allows the facilitators and University to gather insights from each student, along with feedback on how they are progressing with their studies.
She added, “The evaluation is built into the program for three reasons: to gather feedback from students, to help Pasifiki HR understand what challenges they may face with their studies and to provide an opportunity to motivate them before they return to class to complete their course next week.”
“We know it’s important to have continuous dialogue with the students because we all want to see them complete their studies successfully and potentially become future employees for the Tina Hydro Project,” she added.
CBSP Coordinator Francis Kapini also said he is very pleased with the progress of the students and the Program. “Our collaboration with Pasifiki HR as a sub-contractor has been successful in helping ensure students attend their classes at SINU and get the most out of the opportunity they have been given.”
"Overall, I'm impressed with the performance of the first group of sponsored students from the Tina Project communities, particularly the trades students who are now doing practical work with other construction companies," Francis added.
Jocabeth Rapo, a secretarial studies student, said that while she is looking forward to returning to class, she is glad they underwent the evaluation because it will help Pasifiki HR identify gaps that need to be addressed.
"I'm hoping that this evaluation session will give Pasifiki HR a chance to look at loopholes that they need to close, especially with the second batch of sponsored students." Jocabeth stated.
The majority of the first group of CBSP sponsored students will complete their studies by the end of 2022 and will recommence academic classes next week.
