Malatoha Womens Association Explore Opportunities Across the Tina River Hydropower Project.

The Malatoha Women’s Association is strengthening its engagement with the Tina River Hydropower Development Project, exploring opportunities for women to participate in and benefit from different activities associated with the project.

The Association is already engaged in an agreement to supply fruits and vegetable produces to the Tina River Hydropower Project workforce, providing a direct link between women producers in the Malango Region and the project’s workforce.

This existing partnership was one of the key areas discussed during a meeting held with the Malatoha Women’s Association Executive Members at Chichinge Community. The meeting brought together representatives from the Tina River Hydropower Development Project Office, Solomon Power, SMEC, Reeves Envico and Hyundai Engineering Company.

The fruits and vegetable supply arrangement provides a practical example of how women’s existing skills and agricultural activities can be connected to project needs. Through supplying fresh produce to the project workforce, members of the Association are participating in the local supply chain while creating opportunities to generate income from their agricultural activities.

At the same time, the Association is looking beyond existing opportunities and seeking to better understand how its members can link with other components of the project.

A key focus of the discussion was the transmission line component being implemented by Solomon Power. Representatives provided information on the transmission line activities and discussed with the women how the Association and its members could potentially connect with opportunities arising from this component.

For the Malatoha women, the engagement is an opportunity to better understand the transmission line project, its activities and potential areas where local women and their Association may be able to participate. This includes exploring possible opportunities in services, business, food supply, training and other activities as the project progresses.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for the women to reflect on the progress of their Association, including achievements they are proud of and areas where further strengthening may be needed.

The Executive Members also identified areas where additional support, skills and training could help strengthen the Association and improve its ability to engage with current and future project opportunities.

The consultation forms part of ongoing monthly engagements under the Tina River Hydropower Project Gender Component with women’s associations in project affected communities. These engagements provide a platform for women to receive project updates, engage directly with project stakeholders, share their priorities and explore practical pathways to participate in project activities.

The consultations will continue across the project affected communities, with the next engagement planned with the Bahomea Women’s Association next week.

Through these ongoing engagements, Tina River Hydropower Project and its project stakeholders are working with women’s associations to strengthen their capacity, improve access to information and explore opportunities for women to participate across different areas of the project.

For the Malatoha Women’s Association, the existing fruits and vegetable supply partnership and its engagement with the project demonstrate the growing connections between women’s community activities and the wider Tina River Hydropower Development Project.
