The World Bank Environment and Social Safeguards Framework (ESF) Practice Manager, Mr. Africa Olojoba and other members from the World Bank team , Ms.Nathalie Staelens – Lead Environmental Specialist, Ms. Khine Thwe Wynn – Environmental Specialist, Ms. Joyce Onguglo – Social Development Specialist and Ms. Yulia Zakrevskaia – Energy Specialist visited the Tina Hydro Development Project (THDP) site on 27th March 2026, to observe firsthand the progress of the landmark renewable energy project.
The visit commenced at the Hyundai Engineering Company, Site Office, where the delegation received a safety induction presentation outlining the project’s safety protocols. The team then proceeded to the Dam Site, before concluding their visit to the Powerhouse Site, which included the main tunnel system currently under development.
During a short meeting held at the Garivera Camp Site, Mr. Africa shared three key observations from the site visit. First, he noted the remarkable development of the project—its structures, construction progress, and the significant milestones achieved to date. Second, on OHS practice, he commended the strong commitment of all teams in upholding occupational health and safety standards on site. Third, he highlighted the project’s positive impact on biodiversity, specifically praising areas of natural revegetation and the active replantation programme underway.
The World Bank is one of the principal financiers of the Tina River Hydropower Development Project and plays a significant role in supporting the project’s vision for clean, affordable, and sustainable energy for Solomon Islands.
The Tina River Hydropower Development Project is the country’s first large-scale renewable energy initiative and is expected to significantly reduce reliance on diesel power generation, lower electricity costs, and contribute to Solomon Islands’ national climate commitments.
The Tina River Hydropower Development Project is led by the Solomon Islands Government, with financing and support from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, the Asian Development Bank, the Government of Australia, the Green Climate Fund, Korea EX-IM Economic Development Cooperation Fund, and the World Bank.
